As with anything related to North Korea, not much is known from the reclusive regime. So details are hard to verify from an enigmatic government which controls the media. (click here for CNN’s report)
The “Heir-Apparent” and youngest son of the late dictator, Kim Jong Un (27) was poised to lead. However several reports have indicated that the transition has been slow to none. Nepotism might have been trendy a decade ago (or millennium depending on how you see it), but the lack of confidence in his “inherited” abilities as a Leader may lead to a power vacuum. Kim Il Sung (the first leader of N. Korea) took part in guerrilla warfare before taking power in his 30′s. His son, Kim Jong Il took office in his 50′s with decades of experience. Kim Jong Un’s very few years are not as…..seasoned. In order to compensate, he might feel compelled to do something violent and rash.
If not, a coup d’état in the next few weeks is likely as many of his peers will try to occupy a throne they feel they righteously deserve.
This uncertainty in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (North Korea for short) just might be South Korea’s only chance at Unification, rejoining the two Korea’s as one sovereignty. A seventy year insurrection is a long time to be at war. A long time for families to be apart. I don’t only mean it metaphorically, but literally as well. Imagine if the Civil War went that long? Other countries should recognize that this is a tremendous opportunity to provide true humanitarian aid to millions; by liberating the deprived nation.
I’m pretty sure that somewhere in Pyongyang, there is a group of high level military officials behind closed doors listening to a record of “Who’s on First?“….and understanding it.
